Help needed to upgrade Taiko Camp

For over 30 years Taiko Camp has been the base for taiko conservation. When David Crockett first started chasing this elusive bird in the early 1970’s, the late Manual Tuanui recommended camping at this site. In those days it was a fly camp, but over time it evolved into the more permanent base we have today. Having a permanent base has enabled more time to be spent working for taiko conservation. In the fly camp days volunteers spent up to 80% of their time simply surviving in the wet rugged landscape of south Chatham; collecting drinking water, cooking over open fires and trying to stay dry. Not enough time was spent on the job at hand, helping taiko. The move to a permanent camp has turned that around, with now over 80% of time spent out in the field working on taiko. The results speak for themselves, the taiko was rediscovered; then the breeding colonies were found, and recently chicks have been transferred into the new predator free secure breeding area.
 
However Taiko Camp is now showing its age, and is badly in need of some TLC. Over the past 3 years we have upgraded the main living area and workshop, but the four sleeping huts desperately need replacing. One of them is so bad it needs a tarpaulin over the roof to keep out the rain. For our work to continue we need your help; we desperately need funds to replace the sleeping huts and get Taiko Camp back to full fitness. New Chatham Island Taiko Trust tee shirts are now available. A large number of people have volunteered for the Taiko trust over the years and this would make the perfect memento of your time at Taiko Camp. All proceeds from the sales of tee shirts will go to help fund conservation projects in the Chathams. As an introductory offer for a limited time these tee shirts are available for only $25 each (plus $5 for postage and packaging).
